September has been a month full of activity at the Museu Casteller de Catalunya, in Valls. We have shared knowledge, celebrated our traditions, discovered new perspectives on the world of human towers (castells) and continued working to make the Museum an increasingly participatory and inclusive space.

From celebrating Catalonia’s National Day to presenting a photography project that captures the emotions of human towers, as well as exploring casteller culture through research and holding meetings of the women’s casteller working group, September has given us many memorable moments.

Let’s look back at everything we’ve experienced!

RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE: EXPLORING THE CASTELLER TRADITION THROUGH UNIVERSITY RESEARCH

This September, we had the opportunity to share a day of learning with Òscar Saladié, who is involved in research into the casteller tradition at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV).

The meeting allowed us to continue exploring the world of human towers from an academic and educational perspective, highlighting the importance of research in gaining a deeper understanding of this tradition.

Because castells are about emotion, strength, balance and teamwork, but they are also about history, knowledge and a cultural heritage that continues to inspire new questions and areas of research.

At the Museu Casteller, we are committed to making this knowledge accessible to everyone who wants to discover the world of human towers beyond the town square.

CATALONIA’S NATIONAL DAY IS ALSO CELEBRATED AT THE MUSEU CASTELLER DE CATALUNYA

On 11 September, to mark Catalonia’s National Day (Diada Nacional de Catalunya), the Museu Casteller opened its doors with special opening hours for a day dedicated to our country’s culture and traditions.

Throughout the day, we welcomed numerous visitors who took advantage of this special occasion to discover the history of human towers and the values that have made them one of the most representative expressions of Catalan culture.

A day that reminded us that cultural heritage stays alive when it is shared, passed on and rediscovered from generation to generation.

THE MUSEU CASTELLER DE CATALUNYA TAKES PART IN THE CONCURS DE CASTELLS

September also took us beyond the walls of the Museum!

We were present at the Concurs de Castells, an event on the casteller calendar that brings together teams (colles), enthusiasts and people who share the same passion.

Taking part in this event allowed us to continue connecting with the casteller community where the tradition comes to life most intensely: in the town square.

Because the Museu Casteller de Catalunya is not just a place to discover the history of human towers. It also aims to be a meeting point for today’s casteller community, its teams and all the people who make this tradition possible.

«SIMFONIA D’UNA GRAN CULTURA»: THE EMOTIONS OF HUMAN TOWERS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

Another highlight of September was the presentation of «Simfonia d’una gran cultura» (Symphony of a Great Culture), the photography project by Pau Corcelles.

A project that invited us to look at human towers from a different perspective, focusing on the small details that make a casteller performance so special.

The looks of concentration, the gestures of connection, the hands coming together, the moments of anticipation and the emotions experienced before, during and after each human tower.

Through photography, the project reminds us that castells are much more than the human towers we see rising into the sky. They are also about all the people, stories and emotions behind them.

A way to discover casteller culture through sensitivity, art and the power of images.

WOMEN IN THE CASTELLER WORLD CONTINUE TO SHAPE THEIR HISTORY

This September, we also held the second session of the women’s casteller working group, an initiative organised jointly with the Coordinadora de Colles Castelleres de Catalunya (CCCC).

This space for discussion and participation aims to continue collectively developing a future temporary exhibition dedicated to women and human towers, which will open in March 2027 at the Museu Casteller de Catalunya.

The sessions provide an opportunity to share experiences, reflections and different perspectives on the role of women in the casteller world, both from a historical point of view and in today’s society.

A participatory process that celebrates the diversity of voices and experiences that form part of casteller culture.

Because telling the history of human towers also means giving visibility to all the people who have shaped it and who continue to help it grow.

A SEPTEMBER OF COMING TOGETHER

September has reminded us that there are many ways to experience and share the tradition of human towers.

From university research to photography, from casteller performances to Museum visits and opportunities for collective participation, each activity has allowed us to discover a new perspective on this tradition.

At the Museu Casteller de Catalunya, we would like to thank all the people, organisations and professionals who have taken part in this month’s activities, as well as all the visitors who have joined us.

We continue working to make the Museum a vibrant, welcoming space that remains closely connected to casteller culture.

And you, haven’t visited us yet?

We look forward to welcoming you to the Museu Casteller de Catalunya, in Valls, where you can discover more than two hundred years of history, emotions and tradition.

Because human towers are not just something to learn about. They’re something to experience!
