THE HUMAN TOWER MUSEUM OF CATALONIA IS AT THE HEART OF THE CASTELLER WORLD: BUILDING HUMAN TOWERS

Human towers can trace their history back to Valls. This traditional activity has managed to adapt to changing times over the course of its 200-plus years of history. Today, casteller events are extremely popular and have a high symbolic value for Catalan society, and are internationally recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The casteller phenomenon is a modern cultural manifestation and is currently experiencing an exciting moment in its history.

BUILDING HUMAN TOWERS

At first glance, the castells may simply look like different shapes of human towers, formed by people standing on the shoulders of others.
But they’re much more than that: human towers are one of the most genuine and singular cultural manifestations in Europe, an iconic Catalan tradition that serves as an excellent ambassador to the world.
A living, dynamic reality, a story that is still being told.

COLLES CASTELLERES (HUMAN TOWER TEAMS)

The towers are created by the castellers, men and women of all ages, races, physical conditions, origins, social status…and they work in teams called colles.
In general, each team represents a specific town, although there are also towns with more than one colla.
